About the Play: Of Mice and Men
Of Mice and Men is a parable that explains what it is to be human. It is a story about the nature of human hopes and dreams and the forces that work against their achievement.
Set during the Great Depression of the 1930's, it reveals the struggles of the downtrodden to achieve the American Dream, to find a place to call "home," despite the uncertainty of success.
Winner of the New York Drama Critics Circle Award and written by the Nobel Prize Winning Author, John Steinbeck, two drifters, George and his friend Lennie, with delusions of living off "the fat of the land," have just arrived at a ranch to work for enough money to buy their own place.
Lennie is a man-child, a little boy in the body of a dangerously powerful man. It's Lennie's obsessions with things that are soft and pretty that have made George cautious about who the gentle giant, with his brute strength, associates with.
George's promises to allow Lennie to "tend to the rabbits" on their future land keeps Lennie somewhat calm, amidst distractions, as the overgrown child needs constant reassurance. However, as interactions with other people on the ranch increase, and tensions build, George faces a serious moral question: how should he deal with Lennie before the other ranchers take matters into their own hands?
